Played by four different actresses (including the extraordinary Momoi Kaori, and Kumiko Kan in her last performance), Chika is as fiercely independent as the women of Kazuo Hara and Sachiko Kobayashi’s documentaries; she recalls, as well, the spurned and defiantly resilient women of Mizoguchi, Naruse, and Imamura films.

Director Kazuo Hara tells the tale of the eponymous Chika and four different relationships she has during the turbulent political climate of the 1970s. Four different actresses play the role of Chika in order to emphasise the different ways she is perceived by her husband, a teacher, a student and an aging gangster.

In the end, The Many Faces of Chika is an interesting experiment in perception, but the gimmick of using different actors for one character creates too much alienation for one film, leaving audiences with no one to root for. This idea would work better for a multiple-episode miniseries than a 114-minute film.
