Ohong Village, a story of returning, reunion and reconnection, portrays people trapped between the stagnated urban world and their rural family they are estranged from.

In a southwestern Taiwan oyster-farming village whose land keeps on subsiding, preparations for the King Boat Festival are proceeding. Shengji, an almost 30-year-old man, returns to his hometown he left several years ago. He assumes an air of superiority and behaves like a prosperous businessman in an ostentatious manner.

In his debut feature “Ohong Village”, director “Luke” Lim Lung Yin aims to give a voice to the voiceless by portraying a milieu of a remote fishing village in the times where the nature and the economy are about to ruin its prospects.

Lungyin Lim (Fengyuan, Taiwan) is a writer, photographer, film director and producer. He started his career with short films such as Ping (2013) and O (2015). Ohong Village (2019), mostly shot in 16mm and heavily influenced by Andrei Tarkovsky, is his first feature film.

OHONG VILLAGE marks the boundary between the old and the new, offering westerners and Taiwanese equal access to the subtleties of generational divides, living up to family expectations, and reconciliation with the past.

Synopsis In the remotest corner of southern Taiwan, the sinking fisherman´s village prepares for another carnival for the god. Sheng, a man reaching his 30s, returns in disguise as an established urban elite. As the carnival escalates, Sheng confronts his persistent father.

Ohong Village has a stunning variety of wide shots across beautiful scenery. The film was shot on Kodak 16mm film and this adds to the vibrancy and the general aesthetic. From the beach wasteland at the start to the city lights, the film always dazzles and surprises in its variety of locations.
