Summer 1993 (Original title: Estiu 1993) is a 2017 Catalan-language Spanish drama film directed and written by Carla Simón. The film premiered in the Generation section at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival, where it won the GWFF Best First Feature Award.
Summer 1993 Synopsis. After her mother's death, six-year-old Frida is sent to her uncle's family to live with them in the countryside. But Frida finds it hard to forget her mother and adapt to her new life.
Almost all of these reviews are for some other film, apparently a concert movie that took place in Austria (possibly in the summer of 1993? Who knows?) Back to the matter at hand: Carla Simon's *incredible* film debut about a 6- or 7-year-old girl being displaced upon the death of her mother.
Summary: In the summer 1993, following the death of her parents, six years old Frida moves from Barcelona to the Catalan province to live with her aunt and uncle, who are now her new legal guardians. The country life is a challenge for Frida – time passes differently in her new home and the nature that surrounds her is mysterious and estranging.
“Summer 1993” feels like that, most notably in late scenes where Frida suddenly becomes antagonistic toward her playmate. She abandons Anna in the woods and makes plans to run away from her aunt’s stricter household. At first, I thought Frida was being a ripe pain in the ass, but then I figured out what Simón was showing me.
SUMMER 1993 focuses on the life shared by two young girls, who deliver extremely raw, deep, and moving performances from beginning to end. The script is based on the writer/director’s own life when she was a young girl living in Spain.
